During the recitation of the Holy Quran, a reciter may make several types of mistakes. In Arabic, a mistake is called اللحن ‘Lahn.’ It means the reader is moving from correct to wrong.

The scholars have broadly categorized the mistakes into two types:

What are Lahn-e-Jali or Clear mistakes?

Lahn-e-Jali means the error is clear and obvious like the sun. Such error occurs in letter and can be caught both by the listener and the reader.

The clear mistakes must be avoided and to avoid them, one must acquaint himself with the knowledge of Tajweed. These mistakes change the meaning of Quranic words and committing such mistakes is Haraam (sinful).

According to Imam Ibn e Taimiyah, it is not desirable for someone who knows Tajweed to offer prayers behind a person who commits clear mistakes in their salaah.

Examples of Lahn-e-Jali include:

1.      Adding or dropping Shaddah

2.      Changing a letter

3.      Adding a letter

4.      Dropping a letter

5.      Changing a harakah (vowel)

6.      Changing Mutaharik to sukoon

7.      Changing Sukoon to Mutahrik

8.      Adding or dropping Shaddah

What are Lahn-e-Khafi or Hidden mistakes?

Lahn-e-Khafi means the hidden error. Such error occurs in word and are not very obvious. They may be caught only by those who have knowledge in tajweed.

The hidden mistakes although doesn’t change the meaning of Quranic word but they decrease the beauty of the word. Making such mistakes is ‘makroh’ (disliked) and it could be Haraam (sinful) if committed intentionally.

Examples of Lahn-e-Khafi are not adhering to the rules of Idgahm, Izhaar, Ikhfaa, Takhfeem letters, Tarqeeq letters etc.
